Frozen in time
"Memories, frozen, in time". I’ve seen this statement many times on different photography websites. I always took it with a pinch of salt. Yeah, I know it makes sense, but personally, I thought it’s a bit cheesy. And then … the 20th of December 2020 had happened... Oh, look at me creating drama.
I take an interest in shipwrecks. I wanted to explore this subject and capture few pictures. The below image was taken during my second visit to Pin Mill, Suffolk.
This image doesn’t tell much… a couple of people looking at something that once was a boat. Nothing out of the ordinary, yet… It changed my view on the "cheesy phrase".
During my first visit there (I will tell you more about it a little bit later) I got excited about a bridge and then a boat and I didn’t have enough time to visit the ship’s graveyard. So I’ve decided to pay the place a second visit.
On my second visit, I’ve arrived there, managed to park the bike in the end… (I’m not going to write about all the troubles that I had to do so), and started walking around to find the graveyard, which was not far away and neither difficult to be found. I’ve set up the camera with all the bells and whistles, fire away! I took a few shots close to the first shipwreck. The tide was coming in so I had to clear the area quite quickly. I found a different spot and took some more pictures.
They are alright but I still want to go back there. Maybe to take some sunrise shots next time. If I’ll ever manage to wake up that early… My bed is way too comfy at half five in the morning… Below are four pictures that I took that day, the ones that I like the most anyway.
I am pretty happy with the outcome, could have been better, but also could have been worse. I’ll continue this post going back to the ‘frozen in time’ quote… How I… – and now I’m going to quote someone that has become very dear to me – have managed to give something, an eternal life…
I’m a big fan of the science fiction genre so… I do enjoy time travel. Back in the time, a month (without one day) before. 21st of November 2020. It was the day I went to Pin Mill for the first time. I’m taking the bike out. Nice day, great weather, maybe a bit cold but who cares? I’m on my bike, camera in the top case, the sun is up, and the destination looks very promising, happy days!
On my way I’ve spotted a bridge, I had to stop, maybe I’ll get a cool shot under it! I don’t have many pictures with me, alright, bike on the side stand…
Passed the bridge, looked back… oh why have I done that? Now I have to stop and take some more pictures… Oh no… why? Haha, It might seem like I’m not enjoying photography.
I spent easily a couple of hours at that bridge, took a picture in a spot, moved a meter to the left, shot again, and again. Yeah, it is like that quite a lot. Eventually, I realized that I have to keep going if I want to see those shipwrecks. I did leave, I did arrive at Pin Mill but I ran out of time. I didn’t manage to see the wrecks… but I did take a picture of one boat.
This picture was chosen as a picture of the day by Formatt Hitech (a company that makes the ND filters that I’m using) and shared on their Instagram profile. It made my day, like big-time!…
And this picture may be the last one that shows the boat having much better days. This is the same boat you’ve seen on the first picture in this story.
I was probably the last one that captured that boat as it was. I know, it’s just a boat, still made me a bit sad when it was no more…
